The Challenge: The client's request was to laser engrave a signature quill icon onto a resin pen using a Fiber laser Marking Machine. However, initial attempts to engrave through the resin resulted in complications, as the laser went through the clear coat onto the wood, causing melting and rendering the process unsuccessful.

Adapting to the Challenge: Undeterred by the initial setback, we decided to shift our focus and attempt laser engraving on the clip itself. Recognizing the unique properties of resin and the precision required for the task, we prepared for a challenging yet promising endeavour.

Artwork Preparation: The client provided artwork featuring a quill, their signature icon. To ensure accurate engraving, we imported the image into AI and opted for a three-colour sector image trace. This approach retained the texture and details of the artwork, which is crucial for the engraving process. The resulting vectorized file was saved in DXF format, compatible with the Fiber Laser's requirements.

Sizing and Settings: To achieve optimal results, we measured the clip's thickness (5 mm) and decided to engrave at 3 mm depth, maintaining a height of 5 mm. We adjusted the machine's laser settings, including power (75%), frequency (30 KHz), and a loop count of one. The decision was made to leave the artwork unhatched to preserve the integrity of the engraving.

Precision Engraving: With the Fiber Laser Engraving Machine set up and focused correctly, the artwork was framed using LabelMark software, ensuring precise placement. After small adjustments, we commenced the engraving process, closely monitoring the results to guarantee a successful outcome.

Dual Engraving Option: Considering the client's preferences, the team decided to provide an additional engraving option. In addition to the clip, we successfully engraved the signature quill on the top of the pen, offering the client a choice for the placement of the artwork.

Conclusion: Despite the challenges encountered during the initial attempts to engrave through resin, the creative team demonstrated adaptability and skill in finding an alternative solution. The precision and fine detail achieved through the Fiber Laser Marking Machine from AM.CO.ZA, showcased the capabilities of modern laser engraving technology, providing a customized and elegant solution for the client's unique resin pens.
