MakersLAB.TV S2E11 - Create a Spinning Prize Wheel Step by Step Guide from Design, Print to Finish

In this video Riley powers us through the step by step procedure of creating a spinning prize wheel using Advanced Machinery’s FastCOLOUR large format printer and v-smart vinyl cutting plotter with contour cutting.

Products used in this video:

1)A Squeegee
2)AM.CO.ZA FastCOLOUR large format printer
3)AM.CO.ZA V-Smart vinyl cutting plotter with contour cutting
4)Grey back adhesive vinyl

Procedure of producing a spinning wheel

Design stage

The image was generated by using Adobe Photoshop CC before it was printed on the grey back adhesive vinyl using the AM’s FastCOLOUR large format printer.

Printing stage

Riley used grey back adhesive vinyl which is known as long-lasting with strong adhesive glue. This is a great choice because it ensures that the poster does not get peeled off the wheel seeing that it is used on an ongoing basis.

After Riley was done with the printing he set aside the vinyl for 10 minutes so that the ink could dry or cure. Thereafter he went on to laminate the vinyl in order for it to last longer and to ensure that the ink does not get smudged when touched. The lamination also helps protect it against scratching and wear and tear.

Cutting stage

The vinyl was cut using AM’s V-Smart vinyl cutting plotter with contour cutting.

AM.CO.ZA V-Smart vinyl cutting plotter with contour cutting

A vinyl plotter which is also known as a vinyl cutter or vinyl printer cutter combo, refers to a piece of computer gear that uses a pen to draw your design or artwork on a paper. It enables you to turn your product prototype into a workable template or pattern.

Application stage

The vinyl was applied onto different parts of the wheel and pressed down using AM’s silicone rubber squeegee.

What is a squeegee?

A squeegee is a small, rectangular tool utilized to press vinyl down to make certain that it is straight and doesn’t create bumps or bubbles. Additionally, some types of vinyl have special air pockets created in them that allow for the vinyl to “float” on the surface. Once these pockets are pushed down using a squeegee, they pop and adhere securely to the vehicle.

A squeegee is used to smooth the film over an application's surface and puts a stop to uneven or damaged end results. It prevents unevenness in adhesive and gently smooth out air bubbles that can become trapped underneath a film or screen.
