Maker Video: Technique and Process of Install Cut Vinyl with Vinyl Transfer Tape on Car Rear Windshield

In this video Riley demonstrates to us how he manufactured personalised stickers for a car rear windshield using Advanced Machinery’s V-Auto Superfast Vinyl Cutter with Automatic Contour Cutting machine.

Products included in video:
-Vinyl Transfer Tape
-AM.CO.ZA Vinyl Cut Software
-AM.CO.ZA V-Auto Superfast Vinyl Cutter with Automatic Contour Cutting
-Weeder
-Measuring tape
-Dishwashing liquid solution
-Sponge

Step 1:
Riley makes a design of his choice on the vinyl cut software and then amends settings before he sends it to be cut.

Step 2:
Riley then cuts the vinyl on the vinyl cutter machine. Thereafter he goes onto removing unwanted vinyl from his artwork. This is referred to as weeding.

Final Step:
Then he proceeds to install a window decal by following the steps below:

1) Clean the Surface Area

For exceptional results, Riley wiped down the surface area thoroughly making use of a glass cleaner making sure that there aren’t any bumps or decals pinned down under the window graphic.

2) Make Some Application Fluid

He then applied his graphic by making use of the wet method, in the form of a dishwashing liquid solution. It can be put together by simply adding a drop or two of dishwashing liquid soap into a spray bottle with about a 750ml to 1L of water.

The soapy water stops the graphic’s adhesive from sticking, making it effortless to squeegee down without trapping air underneath or wrinkling.

3) Position and Tape

As soon as the surface area is spotless, he fastened the top of his graphic in place with a piece of masking tape. He took a few steps back to look at his graphic from a distance to make sure that it is in the correct location.
Quick Tip: When you’re satisfied with your graphic’s position cut a wide piece of tape the same length as the graphic and put it at the top of the graphic so half is sticking to the top of your graphic and half on the window itself. You want the graphic to be able to hinge by lifting the bottom while keeping the graphic in place at the top.

4) Remove the Liner

He lifted the graphic from the bottom and detached the protective plastic/paper from the back of the graphic.

5) Apply From the Top Down

Riley raised up the graphic, removed the protective layer and then lightly sprayed the surface of the window and the adhesive side of the graphic with the application fluid that he made earlier and slowly lowered the graphic over the freshly-sprayed surface from the top down, allowing the decal to float on the layer of soapy water.

6) Squeegee from the Centre Outwards

He utilised a squeegee to force out the water under the graphic, starting from the centre and moving outwards while applying firm pressure. By now his graphic looks so great. It is stuck in position without any wrinkles or air bubbles.

7) Remove your tape

Finally, when all wrinkles or bubbles have been removed, he proceeded onto removing the tape. He peeled it from the graphic outwards.
Quick tip: If this starts happening, you may want to either wait a bit longer for the adhesive to bond with the glass, or spray down your tape with water to get it to release a bit easier.

That is just about it! Now stand back and enjoy your hard work!
