The owner of Laser Design & Cutting Studio shows us how she cut and engraved 6mm long ornaments from Supawood using AM’s TruCUT laser and engraving machine.

What is a laser cutter and what does it do?

A laser cutter is a type of CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machine. It is controllable via a personal computer. A designer can create something in some sort of design software, and then forward it to a laser cutter to have it cut out automatically, with just the push of a button. As soon as a design is forwarded to a laser cutter, the machine makes use of a laser beam to cut into or etch into the material on that lies on the cutting bed.

The laser cutter is by far one of the most functional tools in a modern shop. Laser cutters work by conducting a very powerful laser beam, at an exact focal length, onto a material which they either cut or etch, this depends on how the laser cutter has been set up.
Laser cutters cut material correspondingly to other computer-controlled tools, only they do so by making use of a beam of light as opposed to a blade. When laser cutters are set up to etch something on the surface of a material, they operate like a printer, literally using their laser beam to etch an image onto something.
