3D Print Hanging Block for Picture Frame, Design Concept and Mass Print on K8 3D Printers
Sublimation printing on canvas offers a great way to craft personalised wall art. One hurdle, though, is finding a reliable method to hang these pieces. Instead of relying on conventional options, we opted to create a tailored hanger using 3D printing technology and a K8 3D Printer, sold by AM.CO.ZA!
Designing the Hanging block in Tinkercad
We turned to Tinkercad, a user-friendly yet robust 3D modelling tool, to bring this idea to life. Here’s how we designed the hanging block, step by step:
Building the Circular Base
Start with a circle shape in Tinkercad.
Refine the edges by adjusting the sides and segments for a polished look.
Set the thickness at 4mm for strength.
Size it to 40mm wide and 30mm tall.
Adding a Support Block
Choose a square shape, setting it to 4mm thick and 15mm wide.
Rotate it to line up cleanly with the circular base.
Positioned it to extend 11mm outward, accounting for the base’s 4mm thickness.
Combining the Elements
Use the align tool to centre everything precisely.
Group the components into a single unit.
Export the finished design as an STL file for printing.
Setting Up for 3D Printing
With the STL file prepared, we loaded it into our 3D printing software and took these steps:
Verified the model for any issues.
Replicated the design to print several hangers at once.
Spaced the models to avoid overlap during printing.
Optimised the layout with the “Arrange All Models” feature.
For the initial run, we printed 10 hanging blocks to test the bed levelling and quality. Once we were confident in the results, we scaled up production.
Testing the Prototype
After printing the first batch, we attached a hanging block to a canvas block mount. The outcome was impressive—secure, functional, and visually appealing! Whether your artwork is displayed in landscape or portrait, adding a hanging block on each side ensures steady support. With the prototype finalised, we’re ready to produce these in larger quantities.
